Statistics Canada – Loneliness in Canada

A national overview of loneliness and social isolation in Canada based on the Canadian Social Survey.

Research from Statistics Canada shows that 13% of Canadians aged 15 and older report feeling lonely often or all the time, and nearly 1 in 4 youth aged 15–24 report frequent loneliness.

Understanding the scale of social isolation helps highlight the importance of creating everyday opportunities for connection and conversation.

We acknowledge with gratitude that we live, work, and gather on the traditional, and ancestral, territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) Peoples, known today as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations.

We also recognize the ongoing relationships with the W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples, whose historic connections to this land remain strong and deeply rooted.

As settlers and guests on these lands, we commit to listening, learning, and taking meaningful steps toward reconciliation, while honouring the enduring presence, wisdom, and resilience of the Indigenous Peoples who have cared for these lands since time immemorial.
