Open to Conversation
Open to Conversation is a community initiative that uses simple visual signals to make it easier for strangers to start conversations in everyday places.
The program uses buttons and café table signs to indicate that someone is open to a friendly chat. These small signals help remove the hesitation people often feel about starting a conversation with someone they don’t know.
Buttons are distributed throughout the community, and participating cafés make Open to Conversation table signs available for customers to place on their table if they are open to a friendly chat. Participation is voluntary and open to members of the public.
By making openness visible, Open to Conversation encourages spontaneous conversations that can help reduce social isolation and strengthen a sense of belonging in the community.
The program has been supported by the City of Victoria through the My Great Neighbourhood Grant.
Why it matters

Many people hesitate to start conversations with strangers, even when they want to connect. Small signals that show someone is open to a friendly chat can help remove that uncertainty and make everyday conversations easier.
Find a Conversation Café

A number of local cafés participate by making Open to Conversation table signs available to customers who wish to signal they are open to a friendly conversation.

Participation Guidelines

West Coast Speaks programs encourage friendly conversations between strangers in everyday public places. Participation is voluntary and open to members of the public.
Participants are encouraged to use good judgment, respect personal boundaries, and engage in conversations with kindness and common sense.
Conversation tools such as buttons, café signs, and wearable symbols simply invite conversation. West Coast Speaks Health Society and participating venues do not monitor or control interactions that may occur between individuals.
