Sitka Project

The Sitka Project is a community connection initiative that encourages conversation and helps reduce social isolation among men.

The program uses a simple, recognizable symbol — a Sitka spruce tree worn on a hat — as a visible signal that someone is open to conversation. Like the Open to Conversation button, the symbol acts as a quiet invitation that makes it easier for strangers to say hello.

By creating a visible “green light” for conversation, the Sitka Project helps remove the hesitation many people feel when approaching someone they don’t know.

Why it matters

Research shows that many men experience higher levels of social isolation and are less likely to reach out or start conversations when they are struggling. In Canada, men die by suicide at nearly three times the rate of women, highlighting the importance of creating simple opportunities for connection and conversation in everyday settings.

Small signals that make connection easier can help create more opportunities for everyday conversation.

The Sitka spruce tree, known for its resilience along the Pacific coast, represents a simple idea: connection doesn’t have to be loud to be meaningful.

How to get involved

Wearing a Sitka Project hat signals that you are open to conversation and encourages friendly interactions in everyday places.

Sitka Project hats may be provided to participants through a suggested donation that helps support West Coast Speaks community programs that encourage conversation and reduce social isolation in the community.

Participation Guidelines

West Coast Speaks programs encourage friendly conversations between strangers in everyday public places. Participation is voluntary and open to members of the public.

Participants are encouraged to use good judgment, respect personal boundaries, and engage in conversations with kindness and common sense.

Conversation tools such as buttons, café signs, and wearable symbols simply invite conversation. West Coast Speaks Health Society and participating venues do not monitor or control interactions that may occur between individuals.

We acknowledge with gratitude that we live, work, and gather on the traditional, and ancestral, territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) Peoples, known today as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations.

We also recognize the ongoing relationships with the W̱SÁNEĆ Peoples, whose historic connections to this land remain strong and deeply rooted.

As settlers and guests on these lands, we commit to listening, learning, and taking meaningful steps toward reconciliation, while honouring the enduring presence, wisdom, and resilience of the Indigenous Peoples who have cared for these lands since time immemorial.
