Meet a Stranger
Meet a Stranger is a structured, community-based conversation program where participants are paired for a one-hour conversation in a safe public setting. These monthly events help reduce social isolation by providing a welcoming, low-pressure opportunity for individuals to connect face-to-face, practice respectful conversation, and strengthen their sense of belonging.
Launched in 2024 as a grassroots initiative, Meet a Stranger quickly revealed both a strong need and a genuine public interest in creating opportunities for conversation between strangers. The program has since become the flagship initiative of West Coast Speaks Health Society.
The program has been supported by the City of Victoria through the My Great Neighbourhood Grant. Free Meet a Stranger guidebooks are also available in the Resources section for communities interested in hosting their own Meet a Stranger events.
Why it matters
Loneliness and social isolation are increasingly recognized as serious public health concerns. Creating simple opportunities for people to talk with someone new can help strengthen confidence, belonging, and community connection.
Participation Guidelines
West Coast Speaks programs encourage friendly conversations between strangers in everyday public places. Participation is voluntary and open to members of the public.
Participants are encouraged to use good judgment, respect personal boundaries, and engage in conversations with kindness and common sense.
Conversation tools such as buttons, café signs, and wearable symbols simply invite conversation. West Coast Speaks Health Society and participating venues do not monitor or control interactions that may occur between individuals.
