Kind Hearts Club
What is it?

The Kind Hearts Club is a grassroots kindness initiative that empowers children to make a real impact — one postcard at a time. Funded by the City of Victoria through the My Great Neighbourhood Grant, the project invites elementary school students to create and share hand-colored, heart-themed postcards filled with kind messages for strangers. These cards are then placed in public spaces like park benches, bus stops, or little libraries — places where someone might stumble upon them and feel a moment of unexpected connection. It’s a simple, joyful way to help kids spread kindness and learn that even small gestures can brighten someone’s day.
Why is it important?

Loneliness is on the rise in Canada — over 50% of Canadians report feeling lonely at least once a week, according to the 2023 Canadian Social Connection Survey. The Kind Hearts Club tackles this issue early, by helping kids understand empathy and social connection through meaningful, creative action. It also gives families a chance to have important conversations about kindness, compassion, and the power of being seen. At its core, this project builds emotional awareness in children while offering real support to those who may be silently struggling. It reminds all of us that a small act of care — even from a stranger — can make a lasting difference.

How can you get involved?

-
Parents and caregivers can help children distribute their postcards around the community, and use the opportunity to talk about empathy and connection.
-
Families and participants are encouraged to share photos of postcards or their child’s artwork by tagging @westcoastspeaks on Instagram to inspire others and grow the movement.
-
Community members who discover a card are warmly invited to share how it made them feel — helping to build a ripple effect of kindness and connection.
-
Supporters can amplify the project by sharing it, donating materials, or connecting West Coast Speaks with schools and organizations that might want to participate.
The Kind Hearts Club proves that kindness doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful — and that even a simple postcard can spark real connection in someone’s day.
